Tech Salaries by Role in 2026: Entry to Senior Pay and the Visa Route for Each Country

If you want a tech career abroad, the honest salary picture is a ladder, not a single number. In the United States, the middle of the pay scale for software developers is about $136,000 a year, or roughly $65 an hour, and the top of the market is a different world again. This guide shows what each rung pays, what visa route fits each major destination, and what tech jobs with visa sponsorship in 2026 really look like in a market that has changed fast.

1. Tech Salaries by Role in 2026: The Ladder From Entry to Senior

The most reliable pay data comes from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Its May 2025 survey is the latest release, and it gives a median for each tech occupation: half of workers earn more, half earn less. To turn a yearly figure into an hourly one, divide by 2,080, which is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks.

Role (US)Median per yearMedian per hour
Computer support specialists$62,890$30.24
Computer programmers$100,390$48.26
Data scientists$120,230$57.80
Information security analysts$129,180$62.11
Computer network architects$134,050$64.45
Software developers$135,980$65.38
Computer and information research scientists$140,300$67.45

Read the table as a ladder. The bottom rungs are support and programming jobs, where the BLS expects employment to shrink, by 3% and 7% respectively between 2025 and 2035. Further up, security analysts (21%), data scientists (35%) and research scientists (22%) are forecast to grow much faster than average.

Key Statistic: US software developers earned a median of $135,980 in May 2025. The lowest 10 percent earned under $82,460 (about $39.64 an hour) and the highest 10 percent earned over $214,670 (about $103.21 an hour).

That gap between the 10th and 90th percentile is your real entry-to-senior ladder inside one job title. Early-career developers usually sit nearer the bottom of that range, while experience, a specialty and a bigger employer push you towards the top. These are US wages, so the same role usually pays less in most other countries, and rent and tax change what you keep. They also sit below the packages at the largest technology companies, so treat them as the middle of the market, not its ceiling.

2. What Hourly Tech Rates Really Mean (and Who Earns $300 or More)

An hourly rate is not a salary divided by hours. A contractor pays their own taxes and insurance, goes unpaid between projects, and rarely bills 2,080 hours a year. So a freelance rate of $100 an hour does not equal a $208,000 salary.

No official statistics track what independent consultants charge. Industry guides from consultancies and marketplaces put senior generative AI and cloud specialists at $300 to $500 or more an hour, while mid-level consultants more often land between $150 and $300. One published rate card, built on 68 consultants, reported a median of $275 an hour for strategy work and $185 for implementation, but it does not document its method.

Important Note: Rates of $300 to $500 an hour apply to a narrow group of senior specialists who have delivered similar projects before and bill clients directly. They are not a starting point and not what a job offer will pay. Treat any recruiter or course that promises them to a beginner as a warning sign.

The route to those rates is slow. It usually follows years in one specialty such as cloud design, security or machine learning, plus visible proof of past work. Work visas for employees are tied to salary, so the rest of this guide uses salaries.

3. Tech Jobs With Visa Sponsorship 2026: Route and Salary Floor by Country

Every country below ties a tech work visa to a job offer or to proof of exceptional talent, and most set a salary floor. Rules change often, so check each official page before you pay for anything.

CountryMain routeSalary ruleJob offer needed?
United StatesH-1BNo fixed floor; wage level affects selection oddsYes
United KingdomSkilled Worker£41,700 or the job’s going rate, whichever is higherYes
United KingdomGlobal TalentNoneNo
GermanyEU Blue Card€50,700 (€45,934.20 for IT and shortage jobs)Yes
CanadaExpress EntryPoints score, not a salaryNo

A salary floor is only one test. Most routes also check your qualification, your English level and whether the employer is licensed to sponsor.

United States: H-1B

The H-1B is capped at 65,000 visas a year, plus 20,000 more for people with a US master’s degree or higher. A final rule that took effect on 27 February 2026 replaced the pure lottery with a weighted selection. Higher offered wage levels get more entries, so a registration at the top wage level counts four times and one at the lowest level counts once.

A separate $100,000 payment, created by a proclamation in September 2025, applies to new petitions for workers who are outside the US and hold no valid H-1B visa. It does not cover extensions or employer changes for people already in the US. The White House extended the measure on 18 September 2026 to 21 September 2027.

The fee is currently blocked in practice. A federal court in Massachusetts vacated the guidance behind it on 8 June 2026, and on 24 July 2026 the First Circuit refused to pause that ruling. USCIS says it will comply for now but plans to collect the payment if the order is lifted, so read the USCIS H-1B page before an employer files for you. Separately, on 25 August 2026 the Department of Homeland Security proposed a new fee of $103,265 on every cap-subject H-1B petition. It is only a proposal, the comment period closed on 24 September 2026, and it is not in force today.

United Kingdom: Skilled Worker and Global Talent

For a Skilled Worker visa you need a licensed sponsor and a salary of at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for your job, whichever is higher. Medium-skilled jobs qualify only if they are on the immigration salary list or the temporary shortage list, as the GOV.UK Skilled Worker job rules explain. New applicants must show English at level B2, and our guide to UK sponsoring employers and the Skilled Worker salary threshold covers the employer side.

Global Talent suits a smaller group. If Tech Nation endorses you as a leader or potential leader in digital technology, you need no job offer, no minimum salary and no English test. Fees total £766 per applicant, made up of £561 for the endorsement and £205 for the visa, and the healthcare surcharge is usually £1,035 a year for each person.

Germany: EU Blue Card and IT Routes

The EU Blue Card needs a recognised degree and a job offer paying at least €50,700 gross a year in 2026. A lower floor of €45,934.20 applies to IT specialists, shortage jobs and recent graduates. Above €50,700 the Federal Employment Agency’s approval is not needed, and below it the approval is handled during the visa process.

Germany is unusual because it also has experience-based routes for IT specialists without a degree, set out in the Make it in Germany IT specialist overview. One needs three years of academic-level IT work in the previous seven years and a salary of €45,934.20. Another needs two years of IT work in the previous five years and a salary of €45,630, a floor that falls away for employers bound by collective agreements.

Canada: Express Entry

Canada does not require a job offer for Express Entry, which ranks candidates by points. Its STEM category, as listed on the canada.ca category-based selection page on 22 June 2026, names only 11 occupations, and the only IT job among them is cybersecurity specialist. Software developers and data scientists are not on that list.

The category also asks for 12 months of full-time work in one listed occupation within the past three years. None of the 15 most recent rounds, from 6 August to 1 October 2026, was labelled STEM. In September, Canadian Experience Class rounds invited 2,000 candidates each at scores between 518 and 521, and if you prefer an employer route, see our guide to Canadian employers that sponsor skilled workers.

4. How to Apply for a Tech Work Visa: Step by Step

The order matters, because most routes need a sponsor before you can apply. Use the steps below as a checklist and adjust them for the country you pick.

Advertisements
  1. Match your job to the official occupation list or code for the country.
  2. Check that your degree is recognised. Germany, for example, checks foreign degrees in the anabin database.
  3. Book an English test if the route needs one. The UK asks new Skilled Worker applicants for level B2, and IELTS and PTE are common choices.
  4. Look for a licensed sponsor through official employer lists and reputable job boards.
  5. Get the salary and job title in writing and confirm they meet the route’s floor.
  6. Apply on the official government website and pay only the published fees.
  7. Budget for health cover, travel insurance, first-month housing and a safe way to send money home.

Important Note: Never pay anyone who guarantees a visa or a job offer, and never send money to a person who says it secures a place with an employer. Use a regulated immigration lawyer or adviser, and read our guide to choosing a genuine immigration solicitor in the UK before you hire one.

Keep digital copies of every document and every message with the employer. If a rule depends on your own case, such as past refusals or family members travelling with you, ask a regulated adviser instead of relying on a forum.

5. The 2026 Tech Job Market: Layoffs, AI and Who Is Hiring

The market is split in two. Layoffs.fyi counted 128,536 tech workers laid off at 299 companies between 1 January and 10 September 2026, already more than in all of 2025. At the same time, Indeed Hiring Lab reports that US software development postings are up almost 15% since late February 2025, while postings across all jobs fell 7%.

Indeed also notes that the rebound is lopsided. Senior roles made up 71% of the net increase in software postings from May 2025 to May 2026, and 37% of the increase came from postings with AI in the title. Software postings are still about 27.5% below February 2020, according to Indeed Hiring Lab’s July 2026 analysis.

Quick Answer: Is tech still a good career for a newcomer? Demand is real, but it leans towards experienced people and AI skills. Entry-level jobs are scarce, so expect a slower start than the salary headlines suggest.

The BLS does not treat AI as a threat to software developer jobs. It lists software for AI, robotics and automation as a source of demand, and you can see the pay and outlook for each role on its software developers page. Even so, the Stack Overflow 2025 survey shows AI tools are now part of everyday work, so employers expect you to use them.

6. Skills and Certifications That Support a Higher Rung

The faster-growing BLS roles point to where to build skills: security, data and machine learning. Cloud certifications from AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud can show an employer that you have hands-on knowledge, especially when your work history is short. They do not carry a fixed pay rise, so judge each one by the job ads that ask for it.

Pair any credential with proof of work, such as a public project, an internship or a short contract. For senior pay, a record of delivered work counts for more than a course certificate. It also makes a sponsored hire easier for an employer to defend.

Plan the side costs too. English test fees, credential assessment, health cover, first-month housing and money transfers home all add up before your first salary arrives.

7. Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get tech jobs with visa sponsorship in 2026 without a degree?

In some cases, yes. Germany has IT routes that use work experience instead of a degree, while the H-1B needs a role that qualifies as a specialty occupation and Global Talent depends on an endorsement. A regulated adviser can check your case.

Advertisements

Is $100 an hour a realistic starting rate?

No. The BLS median for US software developers is about $65.38 an hour, and the lowest 10 percent earn under $39.64 an hour.

Does the $100,000 H-1B payment apply to me?

It was written for new petitions for workers outside the US who have no valid H-1B visa. A court has blocked the related guidance for now, but the order is under appeal, so the position can change. Check the USCIS H-1B page and ask the employer how they will file.

Is the UK Skilled Worker salary threshold still £41,700?

Yes. GOV.UK sets the general threshold at £41,700 a year or the occupation’s going rate, whichever is higher. Some health, education and lower-paid categories follow different rules.

Will AI take tech jobs in 2026?

Nobody can promise either way. The BLS projects 10% growth for software developers and testers to 2035, and Indeed shows postings rising for senior and AI-related roles. Entry-level hiring is the weak spot.

8. Next Steps for Your Tech Work Visa

Start with the salary ladder. Find your role and level in the table, then compare it with the salary floor for the country you want.

Then read the official page for how to apply for a tech work visa in that country, and build a sponsor shortlist from official lists. Tech jobs with visa sponsorship in 2026 are real, but they go mostly to experienced people with proof of skill, so build that proof while you apply.
